1st Day – Noon and the party leaves town heading South to go to
Kassen’s Tomb and retrieve the symbolically magical Everflame in the
special lantern. Snark ensues. A couple of hours through the woods and
they are attacked by illusory Orcs. The smell of pipe weed lingers in
1st Night – Make camp near the Broken Glade. Ooklar hunts down a deer
and as the sun sets the howling of wolves is heard. A single wolf
approaches the camp but is shot by Bella and runs away. The rest of
the pack returns later to try and steal the venison from the fire,
losing 3 of their packmates in the failed attempt. The bard is
injured, having thought this was just another illusory attack. The
half-orc uses the wolf heads to put on a puppet show and the rest of
the night passes uneventfully.
2nd Day – Around Elevenses the party reaches the north edge of the
Gray Lake. Washed up on it’s shore is the body of a man bearing newly
minted coins from a city far to the North. Although the color text is
mostly 4-color, the party finds the site where the rest of the
foreigners had made camp. Both the timing of the body’s death and the
age of the camp indicate this was roughly 2 months ago. (To explain
why the module says “2 months” I’ve looked up some basic resources and
determined that it was cold and the body is in the late stages of dry
decay. Either way, it’s not as recent as 2 days ago for the sake of
the so-called plot.)
2nd Day – Tea time, and the party has reached the North edge of the
Serpent Gorge and as it starts to rain … they decide to pitch their
tents, um, make camp for the night rather than descend down to what
would have been the dry tomb entrance.
2nd Night – Sumak the monk is on watch and wakes the party with the
rallying cry of “Bacon!” as a boar charges him from the woods. Ooklar
makes another puppet.
(So of course, you have tents, you have supplies, and now you have
fresh pork product and more entertainment than anyone can stand… why
would you want to try going down a muddy slope in the rain to some
stupid tomb when the forest provides? Stupid module… I’ll be …
3rd Day – After a period of time gaily camping out in the rain for
(rolls a d20) 12 hours, the rain stops and the group decide to
descend down the now completely slick and muddy switchback trail.
Besides, the bacon and venison have been eaten and they were only
supplied with 5 days of rations to get to the tomb and back to town.
Luckily for them they have enough rope and mad DEX skills to make it
down to the bottom of the gorge without injury.
It’s shortly after 2nd breakfast as they reach the bottom and as the
morning mist clears away the lack of color text they find the tomb
entrance, where 2 horses and 2 ponies from the nearby village seem to
have been slaughtered while still in their tethers only 2 days ago.
(They’re fresh! And wet! Ew!) After uncovering the bones of a skeleton
that had been crushed under one of the horses the Cleric “heroically”
leads the party into the tomb.
… to find 2 dead townspeople (also slaughtered only 2 days ago),
their camping supplies (bedrolls, large pillows (?), 2 days rations,
lamp oil, blunted arrows (?)), and several skeletons lying in the
first main chamber. The skeletons rise up to attack but are easily
dispatched by the party, especially when Red channels the positive
energy of Serenrae against the necromantic energy that animates them.
(Plot Note: There are 3 “death timelines”. One is the group of
villagers that will have been attacked/slain 2 days ago, the group of
foreigners from 2 months ago, and residents of the tomb such as
skeletons will have been dead for roughly 200 years.)
The faint sounds of wailing and sobbing can be heard to the East…
